Family law covers a wide range of legal issues that may involve family members.

Adoption: The state and county you reside in both have legal and agency requirements for adoption. There are several considerations that go in to having the authority to be an adoptive parent, including: financial status, age of the proposed parents, and health of the proposed parents.

Annulment: An annulment is a declaration through a legal procedure that makes the marriage non-existent. An annulment may apply in the case of a spouse that did not meet the legal age requirement for marriage, a spouse that did not have satisfactory mental health at the time of the marriage, a spouse that was forced to proceed with marriage, a spouse that was deceptive in their personification before proceeding with the marriage, a spouse that is already married at the time of marriage as well as other reasons.

Child Custody and Visitation: Child custody and visitation cases may be part of a divorce case and part of Juvenile and Family Court. The decisions made in child custody and visitation include: location for living, which parent the child will live with, who is make decisions, the type of decisions each parent will make, and the type of contact the child with have with each parent.

Child Support: Child support is calculated by a formula set by the state. However, factors affecting the final calculation for child support include legal arguments made in defense of the justification for the extent of support. The calculation does factor in income and the amount of time that each parent is spending with the child.

Divorce: Divorce is the dissolution of a marriage by way of fault or no fault. See divorce law for more info.

Domestic Violence: Domestic violence is a civil court matter in which an affected party may acquire a protective order in order to eliminate the abuser’s interaction with the affected party. The protective order may involve other matters such as removal from shared premises, child support and restriction from firearms.

Pre Nuptial Agreement: A prenuptial agreement consists of an understanding between spouses about assets, liabilities, income, gifts, alimony, spousal support, real estate, and precious items such as jewelry. The prenuptial agreement discloses the will of both individuals should one die and the distribution of the above mentioned items.

Separation: A legal separation is a document that that dispels the terms for two spouses separating from marriage. Often termed trial separation, this is a temporary time period to decide if the marriage should continue or if a divorce should follow.

Social Security Disability: Social security disability benefits provide monthly payments to disabled people that are unable to work and qualify for the benefit. There is also Supplement Security Income that is available to disabled people that do not qualify for social security disability benefits. Social security benefits are a consideration in divorce planning as well as child support in some instances.

Spousal Support: Spousal support, also known as Alimony or Spousal Maintenance, is a term used to describe payments paid to a spouse following divorce.
